Brent Renters' Rights Toolkit

Our guide to the big changes for people who rent their home from a private landlord

This Toolkit is to help private renters living in Brent. It gives you practical advice about things your landlord must do; your rent; the conditions in your home; and how you can get some of your rent back if your landlord doesn’t comply with the law. It also tells you what to do if your landlord wants you to leave.

If you live elsewhere, we suggest that you contact your local Council. You should be able to find out more from their website. You can also contact your local Citizens’ Advice or Law Centre.

For all who want a summary of the basic changes, you can find these on Shelter’s website here.

Important Note:
The purpose of our Toolkit is to provide information. It should NOT be relied upon as a substitute for legal advice from a qualified solicitor regarding any actual legal issue or dispute. Nothing on this website should be construed as legal advice or perceived as creating a solicitor-client relationship.

Information for private renters in Brent

The law governing tenancies in the private rented sector is very complex and this Toolkit cannot cover everything. It aims to give you information on the key areas you are likely to need, combining the rights renters had before 1st May 2026 which are still relevant, and the changes made in the Renters’ Rights Act 2025. There will be further changes over the coming months and years and we aim to update this information when necessary.

The biggest change is that landlords will no longer be able to end your tenancy without a specific reason. This means that you can feel bolder in understanding and exercising your legal rights without worrying about whether you will be evicted for complaining.

However, if you develop a good relationship with your landlord you may not want to risk that by taking formal action. So, if you want to use your tenancy rights to make sure your landlord acts as they should, we suggest that you contact us for a chat before you decide what action to take. You can email us at info@fairerhousing.org.uk and we will arrange a time to talk to you about your options.
