Long Term Security
Private renting now offers a long-term home. Both new and existing tenants should therefore consider:
- Will the property be the right size as your family grows? If, for example, you have a young son and daughter who share a bedroom, they will need a bedroom each when the youngest one is 10 years’ old.
- Can you afford the rent? You may be entitled to housing benefit (Universal Credit) to help with this.
- Remember that landlords and letting agents must not refuse to let to you because you have children unless there are special circumstances, such as a flat in a block which is designated for older people.
- They cannot refuse to let to you because you are on benefits, although they may ask you for a guarantor.
- It is also unlawful to refuse you due to your personal characteristics including your race, gender, faith, disability, sexual orientation, religion or because you are pregnant.
